There are only a few forms of community dialogue that inspire the mind and awake the heart, TED talks are among those small few. A TEDx conference is independently planned and often times community led and they feature short talks or demonstrations of ideas that the speaker wants to share with the community. TEDx Mogadishu last conference in 2014 saw talks like Ikraan Mahamud’s mobile money and Ahmed Haji on teaching kids martial arts to stray them away from trouble. Its Ideas like these that pulse through many Somalis around the world. Positive and ambitious ideas for a better Somalia and a better Somali community is within reach and a venue like TEDx Mogadishu helps to shine a spotlight on those ideas and work being done.
As we have seen lately with the Somali drought – the country is still marred by trouble. TEDx Mogadishu can be a spotlight for the opportunity we have to overcome those challenges together. Somalia is rising nonetheless; just this February, we welcomed President Farmaajo. And there are scores of other ambitious growth such as in the technological sector.
This is an important moment to bring together ideas and solutions backed by thoughtful action. TEDxMogadishu 2017 will feature the entrepreneurs, humanitarians, doctors, artists, chefs, educators, change-agents and youth who are serving their country as they overcome tough challenges and strive to ignite a bright future for Somalia.
“TEDxMogadishu will break the stereotypes of Mogadishu, and provide a glimpse into the incredible work and lives of those at the forefront of Somalia’s re-emergence onto the world stage,” said organizer Ilwad Elman.
This year’s theme, Iskaa Wax U Qabso / Get Involved, is a call to action for everyone to play a role in shaping the future of Somalia at this critical moment in time. To collaborate, participate, volunteer and help fulfill the dreams of a nation – together. Indeed, Somalia’s greatest resource has always been its people.
In its fourth year, TEDxMogadishu has grown since its first event in 2012 to a 15-person volunteer team, led by Ilwad Elman, a former speaker and now lead organizer. TEDx serves as a reminder that although much has and will continue to change in the redevelopment of Somalia, ideas endure.
