Minnesota — HISTORY was made tonight. Ilhan Omar defeated 42-years term Representative Phyllis Kahn for Minnesota House District 60B. SHE DID IT!!!
A Somali activist has unseated one of the Minnesota Legislature’s longest-serving members in a Democratic primary.
Ilhan Omar defeated 22-term Rep. Phyllis Kahn in Tuesday’s DFL nominating contest. Omar’s victory in the heavily Democratic Minneapolis district makes it likely she’ll be the first Somali-American lawmaker in the nation after the November election.
State Rep. Phyllis Kahn has comfortably represented eastern Minneapolis for 42 years without much challenge. Kahn was one of the longest-serving lawmakers in Minnesota.
Ilhan Omar got 41%. Mohamed Noor got 30%, and Phyllis Kahn got 29%.
Come November, Somali candidate will be on the Minnesota legislature.
We congratulate Ilhan Omar. We wish Mohamed Noor all the best.
It is #Time4Ilhan, it is time for #SomaliMinnesotans
